Alejandro kicked the front door closed behind him with a lithe snap of his foot. He dropped his leather duffle on the floor beside the staircase. The house was quiet. He hadn’t called ahead to tell anyone that he would return home today. It had been only three days, but guilt assailed him at being away during such a busy time. This season was what they worked and fretted about all year long, and Alejandro had become distracted from his responsibilities.

He glanced up the stairs, thoughts on Cassidy, but knowing she was probably in her room with her head buried in work.

Alejandro had left to put some distance between them and control the feelings that burgeoned around Cassidy. His desire at the gazebo had threatened to completely overwhelm his rationality and he had been barely able to rein in his passion.

While away, he had decided he would listen to her business proposal with an open mind, which was progress from where he started: completely against any expansion to the United States. He also determined that he would maintain a separation between business and feelings when casting his final vote about any partnership between Paxton Distributors and Prieto Vineyards.

“Well, look who’s back.” Alejandro turned at the sound of his Avia’s voice. He walked over and gave her a brief hug.

“Did you miss me?”

“I did, but Joaquin kept me company, as well as Cassidy.” She paused expectantly, but when Alejandro remained quiet, she looked around as if checking to see if anyone was in earshot before continuing. “Of course, you know that you are my favorite.”

“I never doubt that.” He chuckled.

“Tell me.” Avia grabbed his hand. “What was so needed in France to pull you away from here during harvest season?”

“It was just a problem with one of our transport teams, nothing really,” he answered evasively. “I handled it quickly and decided that I needed to get back home.”

“I see,” his grandmother simply answered.

“Where is Joaquin?”

“You just missed him.”

“Oh, did he have meetings, or did my brother actually decide to labor out in the vineyard?” He doubted that.

“He left with Cassidy about an hour ago. You just missed them.”

“He and Cassidy?” He tried to keep his voice casual, but his scalp tingled. He rubbed the back of his neck. “They…I mean, where did they go?” Jealousy gnawed within his chest, but he tried not to acknowledge it.

“The poor girl has been stuck on the estate for almost a week, so Joaquin was nice enough to volunteer to take her out to the village and show her around.”

“Like a date?” he asked, head dipping slightly to the side as he awaited Avia’s reply.

“I don’t know if I would say a date, more like a tour.” Avia’s green eyes twinkled as if she found the conversation amusing, but Alejandro was not in the mood for humor.

“Did Joaquin say how long they’d be gone?” The muscles in his forearms tensed and tightened, and he extended them slightly to stretch them out.

“Not really, why?” she asked.

“No reason.
